He spends a lot of time with the wood before he choses to use it – tapping it, touching it, even tasting it - to discover its unique resonance. He is attuned to the playability, comfort and acoustic quality of each guitar he makes. Rizsanyi soon began making his own guitars in a shed on his father’s property, where he experimented with local wood varieties such as cherry, maple and poplar.Īll of his guitars are crafted with hand-carved necks, bridges and inlays. Rizsanyi accepted an apprenticeship with Joe Lado Kovacic, master luthier of the Twelfth Fret, to learn the art and craft of guitar making, then honed his craft again under violinmaker Bruce West. For three Saturdays, I went there and sanded wood, and that was the beginning of the journey.” “So I went to see him one Saturday and he told me to sand wood. “I read about a local guitar maker who was looking for help,” he said. He recalls a day when he became so exasperated with the tedium of his job that he asked the universe what it wanted from him.Ī few days later, the universe apparently answered him through an advertisement in the local paper. It wasn’t long before he was unhappy with the monotony. He started off on a dependable career path, taking a factory job with General Motors to pay the bills. ![]() While he was growing up in Ontario, he loved playing guitar and dreamed of being a professional musician. Rizsanyi has lived in Nova Scotia since 1998, but learned his craft 40 years ago in Toronto. He also teaches restoration and guitar making.
